Blood Gas Analysis

About the course

This course provides the knowledge to understand and interpret both an arterial, and venous blood gases. This includes providing an easy to follow 4 step process, review of the associated pathophysiology, simple calculations to determine abnormalities, supportive literature, and an easy to follow quick reference table.

What you'll learn

On completion of this course, you will be able to:
Explain and interpret the differences between arterial and venous blood gases (click for more details)
Demonstrate a foundational understanding of acid base physiology, including the 3 major physiologic buffer mechanisms, and the 3 primary components (pH, CO2, and HCO3)
Apply Step 1 of the 4 step blood gas analysis process - Identify if the pH is abnormal
Apply Step 2 of the 4 step blood gas analysis process - Determine the primary disorder (using a reference table if required)
Apply Step 3 of the 4 step blood gas analysis process - Identify a metabolic acidosis and calculate an anion gap (using a table for reference)
Apply Step 4 of the 4 step blood gas analysis process - Determine if the compensation is appropriate OR if there is a second disturbance (using the appropriate formula or reference table)
Demonstrate competence with the 4 step blood gas analysis process (by correctly analyzing blood gas examples)
Demonstrate competence analyzing PO2, BE, TCO2, Lactate, and SO2 (by correctly analyzing blood gas examples)
Demonstrate competence applying all elements of blood gas analysis (as instructed in modules 1,2, and 3
